- Explore the caves
Meghalaya has over 1,580 caves and if you are in the mood for some adventure, you can definitely take a tour of at least some of them. Most of these caves are amongst the longest ones in the world, with the Krem Puri (“Krem” means Cave) in East Khasi Hills actually being the longest sandstone cave and it is also believed to have some ancient dinosaur fossils. - Boat Ride in Umngot River (Dawki)
Umngot River is well-known for its clear green water throughout the country. It is indeed the cleanest river in India. If you are in Dawki, you must go for a boat ride in the alluring Umngot River. You will definitely love the scenic beauty all around while enjoying your time boating. A boat ride here is definitely an experience to remember. The best time to visit this place is during October-December, when the clear water looks absolutely splendid. There are bamboo huts near the river where you can stay if you wish to or else you can just put up a tent there.
- Trek to the amazing living root bridges
The living root bridges in Meghalaya are several centuries old. No wonder they are marvellous to look at, considering the effort and time that went into making them hundreds of years ago. All credit must be given to the wonderful creativity of the Khasi people who made them from the roots of rubber trees. Some of the living root bridges that you must visit while in Meghalaya are the Umshiang Double-Decker Bridge in Nongriat Village, Riwai Bridge near Mawlynnong and Ummunoi Bridge in Nongkroh Village. You will be amazed at the strong structure of the roots and you can easily spend a lot of time exploring them and the beauty all around.
- Visit Nohkalikai Falls
During your stay in Meghalaya, you must visit the gushing Nohkalikai Falls (5 km from Cherrapunji), which is considered to be the highest waterfall in India. It has to be in your list of the top places to visit in Meghalaya. A breathtaking natural wonder, it comes down from a height of 340 m and forms a pool, emerald in colour, at the bottom. You can either take a taxi from Cherrapunji or hike to reach the falls. One can spend hours just admiring the immense beauty of the falls as well as the forest surrounding it. It is also known by the name of ‘Seven Sisters Falls’.
- Stay at one of the bamboo guest houses of Mawlynnong
Mawlynnong, famously known as the cleanest village of Asia, is one of the most exotic places to visit in Meghalaya. It is located in the district of East Khasi Hills and has everything that you would be looking forward to on a Meghalaya trip, right from root bridges to sparkling waterfalls to a clean and green environment. On your visit to Mawlynnong, you must stay in one of those bamboo guest houses to soak in the pleasure of village life and also to connect closely with nature.
