Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary: Where the Rhinos greet you
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the Morigaon district of Assam, India. About 60 km away from Guwahati, it takes around an hour and a half to reach via car. Like Kaziranga, it is well-known for the one-horned rhinoceros and has a dense population of the same. Migratory birds can also be seen in abundance here. Other than the rhinoceros, the wild animals found in the forest are Wild boars, Asiatic buffaloes, Civet cat, Monkeys, Leopard etc. It was officially announced as a wildlife sanctuary in 1987.
Pobitora has more than 375 species of birds. Some of them are: Spot-Billed Duck, Spot-Billed Duck, Black Kite, Grey-Headed Fish Eagle, Pallas’ Fishing Eagle, White Rumped Vulture, Pied Harrier, Crested Serpent Eagle, Common Kingfisher, Northern Shoveller, Greylag Goose, Ferruginous Pochard, Gadwall, Darter, Purple Heron, Little Egret, Grey Heron, Indian Pond Heron, Great , Greater Coucal, Black Necked Stork, Pied Kingfisher, Spotted Dove, Lesser Adjutant and Greater Adjutant Stork, Blue Winged Leafbird, Eurasian Collared Dove, Bronzed Drongo, Bronze Winged Jacana, Grey Headed Canary Flycatcher, Common Iora, Barn Swallow, Common Woodshrike, White Throated Kingfisher, Blue Throated Barbet, Long Tailed Shrike, Lineated Barbet, Red Throated Flycatcher, Grey Backed Shrike, Purple Sunbird and Oriental Magpie Robin.
