Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary
This conservation reserve consisting of subtropical broad leaf forest, is a protected area in the Kohima district of the state of Nagaland and is located 18 kilometres from the capital Kohima. The sanctuary lies in the Japfu mountain range which includes part of the Dzukou valley and is spread in an area of around 25 square kilometers. Tragopan Sanctuary is a bird watchers paradise.
Mammals sighted here are Jungle Cat, Gayal, Pallas squirrel, Himalayan stripped squirrel, Barking deer,Binturong etc. Bird species found here are Blyths Tragopan, Grey Sibia, Rusty capped fulvetta, Silver eared Mesia, Red faced liochichla, Crested Finchbill, Black throated Prinia, Flavescent Bulbul, Assam laughing Thrush, Red whiskered Bulbul, Barwings, Scarlet finch, Yellow brested greenfinch, Mountain bamboo partridge, Rufous capped babbler etc.
